Had the
pleasure to photograph The Memory Project speakers’ bureau on Saturday, April
16 in Edmonton’s Strathcona Royal Canadian Legion. The afternoon event featured five local
residents who spoke to a crowded room about their experiences with the Canadian
military. Two of the uniformed speakers are
currently posted at Edmonton Garrison - they shared a variety of personal
stories, including serving in Afghanistan.

The other
three speakers are retired military. One
is a decorated Legion member who served during the Cold War. The other two volunteer with Edmonton United
Services Institute, a non-profit organization that connects and educates civilians
with the military community.
My
favourite speaker was a lady who served during the Second World War with
British Military Intelligence at Bletchley Park – headquarters of the Allied
code breaking centre. She was familiar
with Alan Turing, who was the subject of The
Imitation Game, a Hollywood movie that was released in 2014.
The
Memory Project is a nationwide bilingual initiative that coordinates with veterans
and Canadian Armed Forces personnel to speak at events and share their stories
with Canadians of all ages. Are you a
serving or retired military member? Want
to educate people about your experiences in uniform? The Memory Project wants to hear from
you! Contact them via their website or phone them at 1-866-701-1867.
